Institutional Projects
Davidsonville Elementary School
DAVIDSONVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL replaced their school in 2001, leaving a large open and barren courtyard in the center of the complex. HLA lead the design team to develop an innovative wildlife garden oriented towards nature, science and learning opportunities for students. A variety of separate bird, butterfly and small mammal gardens were created adjacent to a meandering brick pathway. Sales of printed bricks, along with grants, helped to pay for the majority of the construction costs. A central dry riverbed promotes the idea of rain and water as a limited resource and the importance we play in protecting water. The site provides an overall outdoor seating area. Several teachers have adopted specific areas for their classes as they use the areas on a regular basis to promote the connection of science, art, and music to the natural environment and our surroundings.

Bywater Park
BYWATER PARK is a 1-acre park located between 3 affluent communities in Annapolis. The City of Annapolis engaged a joint team to meet with representatives of the 3 communities and local leaders to determine what types of amenities were needed. After reviewing local amenities in the area and the community’s wish list, the resulting design created a small practice field, several pieces of play equipment, picnic areas and a perimeter trail around the park. Art was incorporated into the design through several seating walls, the frame of the trellis, bike racks and play equipment. The site was adjacent to a forested creek, therefore additional plantings expanded the forests into the park and other innovative and sustainable practices were used throughout the design. The final product is being used to enlist funding opportunities for construction of the park.
